Our skin represents a crucial element for our bodies: it encloses our body in an elegant, soft, well-balanced shell, protecting it from external elements while being constantly attacked and invaded by external stimulus.

Even popular traditions recognize skin’s remarkable importance. Just think of the many expressions related to skin: “to save one’s skin”, “to get under someone’s skin”, “to have a thick/thin skin”, among others.

The Skin As A Barrier
Traditionally, consumers (prevalently women) have bought cosmetic products for the skin primarily for aesthetic reasons, whether it be to enhance natural beauty, to use perfume and clean the body, or just to cover-up blemishes. If make-up products such as lipstick and the like have this role, products such as hydra-ting, exfoliating and firming creams, or soaps, making this and many other things possible too. In simple terms, the skin is a true and pro-per protective barrier with its function being to block pollutants, allergens, and infecting agents from penetrating through into our bodies, and subsequently from creating viruses within.

When our skin defense mechanisms are working perfectly, allergens and irritations and other disorders are limited. Our skin is like a mosaic, a wonderful collection of single elements that must cohere together, and fit together perfectly so as to impede penetration by external agen-ts.The level of hydration in the skin is a very important factor because of the mechanisms involved, whose job it is to make sure the barrier effect of the skin is working perfectly. Dehyradated, dry skin is evident when skin starts to peel. The presence of peeling and flakes means there is a problem with the integrity of this mosaic-like cell structure and that the skin is functioning in a reduced mode. Dehydration does not merely mean a lack of water: dehydration is a sign that there are many other malfunctions involving many other imbalances, including, for example, those associated with those very special interstitial fats called ceramides. Ceramides are located between cells that are about to be differentiated during their migration from the base layer to that of the cornea, when they form a type of insulation that acts much like cement does between bricks of a house. Ceramides are extremely interesting on a biochemical level as well: they are equipped with a hydrosoluble group and fat-soluble group, and due to this dual state, they form microlamelles which trap water and therefore impede its evaporation. Although not certain, it is, however, probable that dehydrated skin represents a malfunction in the ceramides. For these reasons, most cosmetics on the market contain ceramides among their active principles.

Use of Ceramides in Cosmetics

The difficulty of procuring this very special substance was once a limiting factor in its use. Obviously, not being able to use those of human origin, the primary source was swine skin; nowadays, biotechnologically enhanced yeast is common. There are plant ceramides and wholly synthetic ones as well, but their different structure compared to that which is naturally present in human skin has led to doubts over their efficacy in the long term. The new line VERATTIVA Body contains probiotics, a rich source of many active principles, including, for example, lactic acid, which according to selected studies, is capable of stimulating biosynthesis of ceramides: this leads to an increase in level of ceramides in the corneal layer thereby improving the quality of the skin’s lipid barrier. As such, this results in increased efficiency of the skin’s hydrolipid barrier because of the addition of natural ceramides that are completely identical in structure to those already present in the corneal layer of the epidermis.
